Run like a girl

Run like a Girl

A phrase I definitely heard growing up, and unfortunately, something I would have said to others too: “Why are you acting like a girl?” “You throw like a girl,” “Oh, you’re actually pretty good for a girl.”

But why? And when did it gain negative associations?

Throughout university, I remember my lecturers speaking on media portrayals of femininity and the perception that women needed men as the dominant gender. Now, working in the fitness industry, I have seen how some women believe they are not strong enough, attractive enough, or fit enough to do something.

It’s time to change that.

I really enjoyed this discussion with Renee Garing unpacking the ways in which the language we use around not only the young, but also our very own friends, family, and colleagues, affects how we perceive our capabilities as a whole person.

I will always remember this Run Like A Girl campaign and how it left me saying, “Hold up, I am strong and just as good as the boys.” https://lnkd.in/em9s9TRE

The words we say and the meaning behind them have an impact.

This episode is a true reminder that you really can do whatever you set your mind to, and the associations society has placed on you (as a man or woman) do not dictate the things you can achieve.
