29 Nov The Journey to Becoming a Two-Wheeled Driver!
Motorbikes… love them or hate them?
I’ve always been a little undecided about this one. While I’ve spent many hours as a pillion passenger, headphones in, soaking up the sights and sounds, the thought of actually being in control of a two-wheeled vehicle with an engine? That was something I never imagined for myself.
But then, Eve came back from her travels in Asia, sharing incredible stories of freedom and adventure, scooting through villages and unfamiliar streets on a ‘ped.’ Her stories planted a seed. Surely riding couldn’t be that different from being a passenger, right?
How wrong I was!
Taking the Plunge
This week, Eve and I decided to take the leap together and work towards our motorcycle learners’ licenses. Spoiler alert: it was an incredible experience that left us both buzzing with pride and excitement.
We started our journey with Stay Upright, guided by the ever-knowledgeable (and delightfully humorous) instructor Aaron. Over two intensive days, we dove headfirst into theory, safety tips, and practical riding exercises. From mastering turns to emergency stops, the learning curve was steep, but oh-so-rewarding.
And then, the moment of truth: riding on the open road.
The Real Adventure Begins
I’ll admit, as day two progressed, my confidence grew, but the thought of navigating real roads alongside other vehicles? Terrifying. Was I ready? Could I handle it?
The answer: yes!
Hitting the open road was an exhilarating experience, a complete assault on the senses. The hum of the engine, the feeling of speed as I twisted the throttle, the pride in safely maneuvering the bike—it was unforgettable.
I was hyperaware of everything: the sights, the sounds, even the smells. This newfound awareness, combined with the joy of riding, was pure magic.
Women on Wheels
A quick shoutout to all the ladies thinking about getting their bike license: this space is yours to own! Our little crew of five was 4:1 female, and I couldn’t be prouder of us all taking on this challenge together.
By the end of the course, not only had we gained our learners’ licenses, but also a newfound confidence in ourselves and a love for the freedom of riding.
What’s Next?
With our learners’ licenses in hand, Eve and I are already dreaming of adventures ahead. Over Christmas, I’ll be putting my skills to the test, joining the family as we explore Indonesia on two wheels. And by 2025? The plan is to complete my full license and embrace the thrill of riding even further.
Final Thoughts
To anyone sitting on the fence about learning to ride: take the leap! Whether it’s for the thrill of the open road, the challenge, or simply the joy of doing something for yourself, it’s an experience worth every moment.
What about you? Have you ever thought about riding a motorbike, or do you already love the freedom of two wheels? Share your stories below—we’d love to hear them!
