Born and raised in the vibrant city ofBuenos Aires, Argentina, Sofi Cristina, at 34 years young, embodies a spirit of adventure and a passion for fitness that has guided much of her life’s journey.

In 2018, armed with a dream to explore the world, Sofi and her best friend embarked on what was initially planned as a year-long overseas adventure. The richness of their experiences ensured that they never returned home, a testament to the life-changing nature of their journey.

As a guest on the ELEVEN podcast, we touched on all things embracing life change, building community, getting comfortable in the uncomfortable, and empowering others.

However, one thing that shines through about the wonderful Sofi is her passion for her country. Here’s what she has to say about the vibrant city of Buenos Aires:

Your True Insider’s Guide to Argentina!

“If you are thinking about travelling to Argentina, make sure you have time, because the diversity of landscapes, people, traditions, and food varies from the North to the South, spanning a length of 3,694 kilometres.

You can travel from one end to the other by driving, without a doubt. However, this will depend on the amount of time each person has. There are also many flight options to take advantage of. There isn’t a single better way to travel than another; it all depends on the goal of your trip. At the centre, where most of the population is concentrated, you’ll find Buenos Aires.

Without a doubt, this is where you’ll find the largest number of options for dining, sightseeing, and exploring. But if what attracts you are the landscapes, nature, and places to visit, you’ll need to venture further out to other areas. The North and South offer different climates and landscapes to discover.

Here’s a guide to the most important places and foods that I would include on my list because, without a doubt, Argentina is defined by its gastronomy but, more importantly, by its people and their traditions of gathering, sharing hours of conversations, experiences, and laughter.”

After our interview, Sofi chatted about all things Argentina, sharing insights into the mesmerising diversity of her homeland. With her passionate tales, she painted a picture of a country blending natural beauty, vibrant culture, and a rich gastronomic heritage that beckons travelers from all corners of the globe.

Reasons Why Argentina Deserves a Spot on Your Travel List

Diverse Landscapes: From the lush vineyards of Mendoza to the breathtaking glaciers of Patagonia, Argentina offers a stunning array of natural wonders. Whether you’re hiking through the Andes or exploring the vast pampas, each region presents unique scenic beauty.

Rich Cultural Experience: Argentina’s culture is as varied as its geography, influenced by indigenous traditions and European heritage. Major cities like Buenos Aires are cultural hubs, offering vibrant arts scenes, live music, and world-class museums.

Exquisite Cuisine: Known for its world-renowned beef and traditional asados (barbecues), Argentina offers culinary delights that cater to all tastes. Don’t miss out on other local favorites like empanadas, dulce de leche, and the nationally beloved mate.

Warm Hospitality: Argentinians are famously hospitable and always eager to share their culture with visitors. Expect to be welcomed with open arms and invited to share in local traditions and festivities.

Adventure and Recreation: With its varied terrain, Argentina is a playground for adventure enthusiasts. Ski in the Andes, fish in the clear rivers of Patagonia, or watch whales along the Atlantic coast. The country offers endless opportunities for outdoor activities and adventure sports.

Where to Go?

Central Argentina:

Misiones offers a visit to the majestic Iguazú Falls, one of the seven wonders of the world.

Mendoza is renowned for its vineyards. A tour here pairs the fine wines with traditional Argentine foods.

North:

Salta and Jujuy are gateways to some of Argentina’s most breathtaking natural wonders like the Hill of Seven Colors and the vast Salt Flats.

South:

Chubut and Ushuaia are perfect for those who seek adventure among glaciers and marine wildlife like the whales of Puerto Madryn.

The broader region of Patagonia encompasses stunning natural sites like the Seven Lakes and offers activities from trekking to skiing in Bariloche.

Gastronomy: The Soul of Argentina

Four Must Try Delicacies

Asado: The quintessential Argentine barbecue, asado is more than just a meal; it’s a culinary ritual. Various cuts of meat, most famously beef, are grilled over an open flame, often accompanied by chorizo, morcilla (blood sausage), and provoleta (grilled provolone cheese).

Empanadas: These hand-held pies are a popular snack or meal throughout Argentina. They come with a variety of fillings, including beef, chicken, and cheese, all encased in a flaky pastry. Each region has its own version, with distinct spices and ingredients.

Milanesa: A breaded and fried meat cutlet, often made from beef or chicken. It’s a simple yet beloved dish that can be found in nearly every café and restaurant, served plain or topped with tomato sauce, ham, and melted cheese in a variation known as ‘milanesa a la napolitana’.

Dulce de Leche: Although not a dish, dulce de leche is an essential part of Argentina’s gastronomic identity. This sweet, caramel-like spread is used in numerous desserts, from pastries and cakes to the iconic alfajores, sandwich cookies filled with this delicious treat.

Embracing the Argentine Way: 5 Ways to Live Like a Local

1. Attending a Football Match: Football is not just a sport in Argentina; it’s a passion. Attending a match, whether at a large stadium in Buenos Aires or a local field, offers a lively and authentic way to experience the local culture and the fervor of Argentine fans.

2. Sharing Mate: Mate is a traditional Argentine tea made from yerba mate leaves and shared communally from a single hollow gourd and metal straw. Joining in this ritual is a meaningful way to connect with locals and partake in an important daily social practice.

3. Participating in a Tango Class or Milonga: Tango is deeply ingrained in Argentine culture, particularly in Buenos Aires. Visitors can take tango lessons or visit a milonga (a tango dance event) to immerse themselves in the music and dance that are a cornerstone of Argentine identity.

4. Exploring Local Markets and Ferias: Visiting local markets or ferias (street fairs) allows travelers to mingle with locals, sample street food, and observe daily life. These markets are hubs of activity where people shop for handicrafts, antiques, and fresh produce, providing a sensory feast and a glimpse into the local economy and traditions.

5. Participating in an Asado: An asado is the ultimate Argentine social gathering, featuring a barbecue that includes various cuts of meat. Being invited to an asado or attending one at a rural estancia (ranch) offers a chance to enjoy delicious food and warm hospitality, and to learn about the culinary traditions that are an integral part of Argentine gatherings.
